All students with a school leaving qualification (e.g. high school diploma) can apply to study at Sapienza University of Rome. Admission to Italian Universities is regulated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy (MAE) and by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). Every year MAE and MIUR publish the deadlines for applications at the end of May.
In order to apply to study at Sapienza University of Rome you must contact the Italian Embassy or Italian Consulate in your home country first. Procedures for enrolment vary according to whether you are an EU citizen (living in or outside the EU), a Non-EU citizen residing in Italy, an Italian resident with a foreign qualification or a Non-EU citizen living outside Italy. Please also check the Study in Italy website (www.studiare-in-italia.it) for further details.
For Non-EU citizens living outside Italy, Sapienza University of Rome will examine the applications received via the embassies and, in case of approval, will contact the student and/or Embassy or Consulate for the student visa - if necessary.
Below is a list of course requisites and documents required by Sapienza University for enrolment regardless of student citizenship.
Minimum entry requirements:
1. First cycle degrees:
- Italian school leaving qualification, or a comparable foreign one
- B2 level of Italian. For details on specific language requirements: www.miur.it
- Good command of English (required level indicated by each course) ONLY IF your Degree at Sapienza University of Rome is taught in English
2. Second cycle degrees:
- Bachelor Degree
- Italian school leaving qualification, or a comparable foreign one
- B2 level of Italian. For details on specific language requirements: www.miur.it
- Good command of English (required level indicated by each course) ONLY IF your Degree at Sapienza University of Rome is taught in English
Applications - Before your arrival to Rome
Non-EU students:
- Contact the Italian Consulate in the city/country you graduated in. You will need to make an application to study at Sapienza University through the consulate in April of the year you wish to begin studying in. For deadlines consult the website Study in Italy
- You need to provide the Consulate with all your previous study documents and certificates which will need to be translated and legalised by competent authorities in your country. This process will provide you with a Dichiarazione di Valore (a certification that your high school diploma or degree is equivalent to the Italian counterpart) necessary to enrol in your chosen degree programme. If you are applying for a Third-cycle Degree Programme, you should contact the Faculty of interest to ask which documents are necessary.
- The Consulate will send your request for admission to the University. After some time, the University will send a conditional acceptance letter to the Consulate which you can use to apply for your Student Visa.
EU or EU equated students, non-EU students legally living in Italy or in other EU countries or Italian students with a foreign qualification:
- You need to provide the Consulate with all your previous study documents and certificates which will need to be translated and legalised by competent authorities in your country. This process will provide you with a Dichiarazione di Valore (a certification that your high school diploma or degree is equivalent to the Italian counterpart) necessary to enrol in your chosen degree programme. If you are applying for a Third-cycle Degree Programme, you should contact the Faculty of interest to ask which documents are necessary.
Important: Certain EU documents may not need to be legalised, please check with your Consulate.
Admissions Tests and Enrolment - After your arrival to Rome
Non-EU Students:
Admission tests and the Italian Language Exam will take place from the 1st of September. Make sure to arrive in Rome before September to ensure enough time to complete the following procedures. Please be sure to comply with all Italian immigration requirements, see 6.1 Practical Information for Living in Rome - Residence Permit
Once you arrive in Rome you must go to the Foreign Student Office (Segreteria Studenti Stranieri) on the main campus. The Office will assist you with the admission/ enrolment procedures in the following way:
- You will be provided with a student number which you can then use to register on Infostud (the University’s online student portal).
- Provide the Office with the following documents:
For admission to a First-cycle Degree Programme:
- Original or certified copy of your high-school diploma legalised, translated into Italian and accompanied by the Dichiarazione di Valore issued by the Consulate.
For admission to a Second-Cycle Degree Programme:
- Original or certified copy of your high-school diploma legalised, translated into Italian and accompanied by the Dichiarazione di Valore issued by the Consulate.
- Original or certified copy of your Degree Certificate legalised, translated into Italian and accompanied by the Dichiarazione di Valore issued by the Consulate.
- Original or certified copy of your academic transcript legalised, translated into Italian and accompanied by the Dichiarazione di Valore issued by the Consulate.
- Official study plan and subject descriptions complete with the University logo accompanied by translation into Italian.
For admission to a Third-Cycle Degree Programme:
- Please check with the Faculty to which you are applying for necessary documents.
- Book the Italian language exam. All foreign students must take this exam except for students seeking admission to a degree programme taught in English. An exemption may also apply for students that have the following certificates of B1/B2 Council of Europe Level:
- Italian Language and Culture Diploma from the Foreign University of Perugia or the Foreign University of Siena;
- Italian Language Certificate issued in Italy or abroad by either the Foreign University of Perugia or the Foreign University of Siena, University “Roma Tre”, the Private University Dante Aleghieri di Reggio Calabria and the Dante Aleghieri Society;
- Other attendance certificates issued by institutions with agreements with Sapienza.
- Book your admission test. All Sapienza degree programmes require students to sit an admission test. The test is competitive ONLY for those programmes that have a limited number of places available.
- Students seeking admission to a Second-Cycle Degree Programme will need to request the verification of their pre-requisites (Verifica dei requisiti). This procedure incurs a €10 fee. The Foreign Student Office will then send your documents to the relevant Faculty for the verification, which may take some time.
Please note that you will not be able to proceed with enrolment until all admission steps have been completed successfully.

You can pay this by printing the payment-slip from Infostud and taking it to any Unicredit Bank branch for payment. All Sapienza degree programmes require students to sit an admission test. The test is competitive ONLY for those programmes that have a limited number of places available.
- In order to complete your enrolment, you must go to the Foreign Student Office (Segreteria Studenti Stranieri) on the main campus and provide the following documents:
