OBIETTIVI FORMATIVI
Il Dottorato in Matematica prepara i suoi studenti a una carriera professionale o accademica nell'area della Matematica e delle sue applicazioni. Per raggiungere questo scopo il Dottorato fornisce: - una preparazione matematica di alto livello e ad ampio spettro; - le opportunita' per maturare capacita' di ricerca scientifica; - la partecipazione a un concreto lavoro di ricerca nelle aree piu' promettenti dello sviluppo della matematica e delle sue applicazioni interdisciplinari. La qualita' dell'alta formazione del Dottorato e' garantita dall'eccellenza dell'attivita' di ricerca e dalla vasta rete di contatti scientifici dei ricercatori del Dipartimento di Matematica. L'appartenenza del Dottorato alla Scuola Dottorale Vito Volterra ne arricchisce le opportunita' formative e il valore scientifico e culturale. Il Dottorato e' articolato nei due curricula, Matematica e Matematica Applicata. Il curriculum in Matematica e' rivolto ai dottorandi che vogliono approfondire i vari aspetti della matematica, e il nostro Dipartimento offre un ampio spettro di tematiche di ricerca, da quelle piu' astratte a quelle direttamente ispirate dalle scienze naturali. Il curriculum in Matematica Applicata e' rivolto ai dottorandi che hanno grande curiosita' intellettuale per i problemi scientifici, tecnologici, economici o sociali che possono essere affrontati con metodi matematici, ed e' l'occasione per diversificare le proprie conoscenze, e per apprezzare e contribuire a sviluppare il ruolo della matematica nella applicazioni. Il programma di studi del Dottorato e' articolato in tre anni. Durante il primo anno, con la supervisione di un tutore, gli studenti seguono i corsi per completare la loro formazione e si inseriscono nell'attivita' di ricerca del Dipartimento. Alla fine del primo anno il dottorando sostiene l'esame di passaggio attraverso il quale il Collegio verifica che il dottorando abbia acquisito le conoscenze e le competenze necessarie per affrontare il lavoro di tesi. Il secondo anno e' dedicato alle attivita' necessarie alla maturazione scientifica del dottorando e alla preparazione della tesi, mentre il terzo anno e' dedicato a suo completamento. I risultati del lavoro vengono presentati al Dipartimento in una apposita sessione di seminari, e successivamente esposti dal dottorando nell'esame finale.


The Ph.D. programme of the Mathematics Department prepares its students for either a professional or an academic career in the area of Mathematics and its applications. To this aim the Ph.D. program provides : - a training which is both of high quality and and wide spectrum; - opportunities for developing research skills; - actual research work in fields that are at the forefront of Mathematics and its many applications in different fields. The quality of our Ph.D program is ensured by the high standards of research and the dense network of scientific contacts present in the Department of Mathematics. Moreover, belonging to the Vito Volterra graduate school gives further opportunities for scientific and cultural contacts. The graduate program in Mathematics is organized in two curricula, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The curriculum in Mathematics is aimed to those students that wants to work in one of the many fields of Pure Mathematics, a field which is widely represented in our Department, in all its facets, from the most abstract to the ones directly inspired by natural sciences.
The curriculum in Applied Mathematics is aimed to those students that a particular interest for those problems in the natural sciences, economics and the social sciences that can be tackled with Mathematical tools; this program is also a way for widening scientific knowledge at large and giving a contribution to the development of Mathematics within other sciences. Study and research activities are structured as a three-year programme. Within the programme, students follow courses (in their first and second years), develop their own research with the direct guidance of a supervisor, and participate in other general research activities of the Mathematics Department. Information about these activities may be obtained by accessing the Department's homepage Beside specific, advanced courses of the Ph.D. programme, the Department offers specialized graduate courses. Provisional advisors are assigned to entering students, and at the end of the first year supervisors are chosen based on the research preferences of the students. In the first year, students focus on intensive course work, meant to provide tools for successful research. In the second year, in addition to some coursework, students develop their research project and regularly attend seminars and colloquia. Their activity is closely supervised and monitored; in particular, a comprehensive qualifying exam must be taken at the end of the first year.
