Objectives
The PhD in Biochemistry aims to form young scientists with the ability solve biochemical problems at the forefront of biology and medicine. At the end of the Programme, PhD graduates are able to:
- continually update their own scientific cultural base;
- recognise, approach and resolve problems of fundamental and applied biology, at the molecular level;
- prepare protocols and conduct experiments, using the most suitable experimental techniques; and
- give public presentations of scientific results and research projects at a national and international level.

The above objectives are achieved over the three year duration of the Programme, in which each student is given the opportunity to carry out their own research project. Theoretical courses are also provided in parallel with the practical activities and the overall process is completed under the supervision of a Tutor.

The bio-molecular and biotechnological research areas active within the Department of Biochemical Sciences are:
- Cellular Biochemistry and Physiology
